This one-day introduction to the art of willow weaving is perfect for those who want to learn the basics of willow basketry. Led by Jane Wilkinson of Special Branch Baskets, the course requires no previous experience of basketry and is suitable for ages 12 and over.
You will start by making an attractive fruit bowl, followed by willow lanterns for your garden. You will learn to use the tools of the basket maker and the art of soaking and preparing willow. You will have the opportunity to incorporate winter foliage into your piece, such as hazel, birch and dogwood.
We will discuss how to identify and collect these hedgerow material, and then assess their suitability for weaving alongside willow. This will allow you to add a variety of colours and textures to your work.
Jane Wilkinson is a willow artisan who specialises in the design and creation of traditional and contemporary willow baskets, bespoke willow structures for gardens and specialist crafts for the bushcraft enthusiast. Her beautiful work can be seen on her website
