Experience the joy of working with willow to create a stunning log basket with or without rope/side handles, on this two-day course at Dalmore Croft. Alternatively you can make a more sculptural basket using hedgerow materials. Jane Wilkinson of Special Branch Baskets will lead you through a unique crafting experience, using basket-makers’ weaves.
Your finished basket will be an object of beauty as well and durable and strong. Jane will be bringing willow for a chunky basket – if you want to make something smaller please let us know when you book so we have the right size willow for your project. Whatever your level of experience, Jane will work with you at your own pace and tailor the course to suit you.
Jane has been weaving baskets, hurdles, sculpture and coracles for over 16 years. She has been chair of the Scottish Basketmakers’ Circle, exhibited in major galleries across Scotland, judged work at the Royal Highland Show and taught all over Scotland. She is one of Scotland’s very best basket makers and we are delighted that she is returning to Dalmore for this longer course.
Who is this course suitable for?
The course is suitable for basket-makers who have some previous experience working with willow. If you’ve been on one of Jane’s courses before you’ll be perfectly prepared. The course requires a moderate degree of manual dexterity and is unsuitable for under 16s.
What’s included and what to bring
Jane will provide all the materials and tools, but do bring your own secateurs if you have them.
Please note there will be a charge of £16 for materials, payable to Jane on the day of the course.
We will be inside most of the time and the course is moderately physical. Please bring gloves if you like to use them.
The course includes a short session on growing willow for basketry, looking at the willow nursery at Dalmore Croft – this part of the course will be outdoors so please bring suitable footwear and clothing.
The price includes tea, coffee and home-baking morning and afternoon, and lunch, prepared using ingredients mostly grown and produced at Dalmore. We can cater for vegetarians and vegans – please indicate on the booking form if you have any dietary requirements.
What will you get from the day?
Apart from a beautiful, practical log basket, throughout the day Jane will share her extensive knowledge about willow, how to work with it, including how to select suitable materials, the basics of storing and soaking willow, and how willow grows.
